Editor: The EI act and regulations will be amended in October to create one special economic zone for Fisheries and Oceans Minister Gail Shea to help her win next year’s election in the riding of Egmont.

All other P.E.I. ridings are Liberal so they won’t benefit from the changes, which is a flagrant abuse of power by Ottawa. The rural residents in the Liberal ridings will not be treated to increased UI benefits as the rural residents of Egmont will be.

The EI program is cost-shared between the employers and employees so it’s not even a government program so should have the same eligible rules applied to the unemployed across Canada. This decision is a terrible abuse of political power, probably illegal but without doubt unfair to Islanders. I have zero respect for Harper and I am embarrassed to admit he is the prime minister of Canada.
