Editor: Last night I watched a Conservative minister of Veterans Affairs disrespect the very people he is sworn to protect and serve. Mr. Fantino was late for a scheduled meeting with veterans. These veterans, consisting of Second World War, Afghanistan, Korea, the Balkans and other conflicts, had travelled from all areas of Canada for this meeting.

Fantino was very late and sent in three other MPs to meet with the veterans. The meeting was effectively cancelled by Fantino so the veterans decided to call a press conference. Well, as soon as Fantino heard the words ‘press’ he was suddenly available. He stayed for eight minutes of arrogant rhetoric and disrespectful comments to the veterans.

He then turned away from them to focus on the media where he again spouted the Conservative propaganda about how much his party is doing for veterans in Canada. The same bologna that he spouted in The Guardian a month ago where he talked about the large dollar figure his government was giving to veterans.

He failed to spell out that the figure was over a 50-year period, misleading readers to think it was an annual figure. He claims there will be 650 new contact points for veterans to access services. It’s like telling patients needing a doctor that they must go to a grocery store to self-medicate.
