Editor: In response to the comment that the library needs more space to better serve its patrons, and in response to the question, but where? Might I suggest remaining in the downtown, but moving across the street — perhaps to the first floor of the former Dominion Building. It is currently vacant, it is accessible, and it would retain the public function of a building that served city as the main postal station for decades.

Former McGill professor, architect and writer Witold Rybczynski offers an online slide show titled, “How do you build a public library in the age of Google?” He points out that libraries are far from dead in today’s Internet age — in fact, they’re making a comeback as key anchors in our downtowns.
