Editor: As the Canadian Cancer Society (CCS) wraps up its 75th anniversary year, I want to congratulate and thank them for the work they have done and continue to do through the many excellent programs and services they offer to Islanders.

My first exposure to the CCS was when I had a visit from a CCS Reach-to-Recovery volunteer following breast surgery in 1985.  While the volunteer provided information to prepare me for my cancer journey, the greatest benefit was the hope and encouragement I felt to see someone who had gone through a similar experience and survived.

As a result of how important that visit was to me, I decided to become a Reach-to-Recovery volunteer with the hope that my visits would provide the same sense of encouragement to others. My role as a volunteer expanded over the years to include fundraising activities, program committees and, ultimately, the Board of Directors.

My involvement has given me a greater appreciation of the difficulties faced by people living with cancer and reinforced the need to continue the quest of eradicating cancer. The CCS is involved in programs related to prevention and education like the Get Screened P.E.I. campaign that encourages Islanders to get screened for cervical, breast and colon cancer. It finances  innovative research that helps us better understand how to prevent cancer, detect it earlier and treat the cancer more effectively when it does occur.

The CCS is also involved in advocacy such as lobbying for the implementation of the catastrophic drug plan. Lastly, its Community Support Program helps connect people to the resources available to them such as financial assistance, information and emotional support.

The effective delivery of these programs and services is made possible by dedicated staff and thousands of volunteers involved in fundraising and the delivery of the important programs noted above.

Again I say thanks for a job well done and keep up the great work.

Barb Sampson
