Editor: I read with great interest the story on Page A-3 Guardian, “Stratford hiring U.S. sculptor to create a tribute to Michael Thomas.” On behalf of the Mi’kmaq Grand Council, I wish to express our thanks for this great tribute the town of Stratfort is doing for Michael. I am sure that they are in constant communication with his daughter Lillian and her children.

In the story I noticed that there were no Mi’kmaq people on the planning committee. Jason Francis is not a Mi’kmaq person, and the Mi’kmaq Confederacy does not represent all the Mi’kmaq people of Epekwitk (P.E.I.)

Maybe we would have some ideas to enhance this tribute as well. Maybe there should be a medicine garden using the four sacred colours of the Mi’kmaq medicine wheel, and the sculpture of Michael Thomas could be placed in the centre of the medicine circle.

In respect of the late Michael Thomas, he should have been referred to as a great Mi’kmaq runner, and not as “a man of First Nations descent.” I am sure that the late Michael Thomas was very proud of being a Mi’kmaq person.
