Editor: An Open Letter to the Hon. Valerie Docherty, minister of Social Services, and Ms. Carol Ann Duffy, deputy minister:
In September, IRAC approved rent increases of one and two percent.
Records show that while this regulatory body, mandated by the provincial government to review and adjust rent rates, has allowed for increases of up to 10 per cent from 2010 to 2013, while your department has not done so with shelter rates. In fact Social Assistance budgets or shelter rates have stagnated several years.
ALERT has made representations to P.E.I. governments for many years raising this and other concerns that allow poverty in our province to be one of the most serious in Canada.
Again, ALERT calls upon your department to increase the shelter rate so that recipients do not have to make a choice between paying their rent and feeding their families.
