Editor: In the Guardian on Wednesday, Oct. 2, the front page revealed the shameful expenses of our elected officials in Ottawa. Three of our representatives have spent over a million and a half dollars on what exactly?
Why is it that politicians think that as soon as they get into office, they have the right to blow away taxpayers money? I am getting so disgusted. Look at situation of our senate, MLAs in Nova Scotia just gave themselves a sweet pension, and what about PEI? We may not be making the news, but you can guarantee that politicians on P.E.I. are doing the same thing. What is it about politics that makes people betray the very people that gave them their jobs; and we are powerless to do anything about it.
Right next to this article of the October 2nd paper was a beautiful picture of Lois Brown from Kensington. She is an amazing woman for whom I have a lot of respect. This 89-year-old woman has given her time free of charge over decades to help her community. This goes from one extreme to the other; our politicians should be ashamed.
As a small business owner, I struggle every day to make ends meet. And, if any one of us regular Canadians or Islanders did some of the fraudulent activities that our politicians are doing, we would be charged and sent to jail. Why is it that our politicians are allowed to get away with stealing from taxpayers time after time? Something has to change.
