Recently I visited the Charlottetown Farmers’ Market where I saw for sale free-run eggs. I wasn’t aware we have these in this province and, I must say, I was pleased to learn we have such a product. In some of the western provinces all eggs must be from free-run chickens. It makes a better product and although more expensive to operate a free-run chicken farm makes for better living conditions for the egg producing fowl.
In some of the poultry farms in this province the conditions under which chickens live is deplorable. There is no space for exercise whatsoever, chickens are crammed into cages with little or no moving space and some are in complete darkness where there is no air exchange. I believe the Department of Agriculture would be well advised to do some groundwork here. There should be government legislation passed that inspections of all poultry farms become mandatory and farmers that don’t make habitation comfortable for their stock be fined or closed down. Free-run eggs taste better and produce a cleaner, healthier product.
So when you’re enjoying your fluffy cheese omelet next time take a moment and ask yourself, “I wonder what kind of living conditions the bird that laid these eggs lives under?”
