After reading this article, I'm now very motivated to give this music a listen, because I've always been a huge fan of Petty's lead guitarist Mike Campbell. He has written and recorded timeless melodies and riffs with Petty, for songs such as The Waiting and Free Falling, along with many other musical gems written under the genre of southern rock. Lyrics such as 'you take it on faith, you take it to the heart - the waiting is the hardest part' is an excellent example of a Petty song that everybody can relate to. And who hasn't sang along to Free Falling when it plays on the radio ?
