City police laid several charges under the Highway Traffic Act after arresting one impaired driver and another disqualified driver over the weekend.

It was only a fraction of the force’s 113 calls for service received over the weekend, which ranged from complaints of assault and impaired driving to more general calls of theft, mischief and damage to property.

Deputy Chief Gary McGuigan said the volume and type of calls is routine for police.

“It wasn’t overly (busy). It’s kind of seasonal for this time of the year so it would be more on the normal end,” he said.

On Saturday, police arrested a 51-year-old city man for impaired operation of a motor vehicle.

The arrest was the result of a traffic stop held by police in the downtown core.

In total, police received eight calls regarding impaired drivers over the weekend.

McGuigan said two of those calls resulted in charges.

“We respond to quite a few calls regarding impaired drivers,” said McGuigan. “Some of them are just bad drivers, some of them are people who swerve to miss a pothole and some are impaired. But we do follow up on them.”

McGuigan said police had also received four complaints of assault, with one of them requiring further investigation which may result in charges.

A 19-year-old Charlottetown man is also facing several charges after being pulled over for speeding on Friday.

City police stopped the vehicle for speeding on the arterial highway.

Officers then identified the man as a prohibited driver and he was subsequently charged for driving while disqualified and breach of probation.

Police also charged the driver for speeding and operating an unregistered vehicle.

Both accused men will appear in Provincial Court at a later date.
