Charlottetown residents need not worry if they see smoke pouring out of the sewer system next week.

The city’s Water and Sewer Utility has hired CBCL Limited to conduct smoke testing of sanitary and storm sewers in the western end of Belvedere Avenue and North River Road to Atlantic Road.

The work will take place Feb. 8-12 and is weather dependent. Smoke testing will not take place during periods of high wind, fog, rain, snow or extreme cold.

Coun. Eddie Rice, chairman of the water and sewer committee, said testing is necessary to help find possible defects in the lines.

“The information obtained from the study will be used to improve the sewer systems,’’ Rice says. “It’s a proactive step to find defects and repair them before they become major problems.”

People may see smoke coming from building vents, roof drains or holes in the ground. This smoke is non-toxic, harmless and creates no fire hazard. The smoke used for this testing should not enter homes or businesses unless the plumbing is defective or the plumbing drains, including building floor drains (P-traps) have dried up.

Residents should be aware that if smoke enters their home or business, their smoke alarms could be activated, and Alarm Services Providers contacted (if applicable).

In the event that smoke does enter a home or business, as a result of this study, the city is asking residents to inform on-site crew leader Roland Gauthier at 902-629-5320. The testing crew will check where and why the smoke entered the building.  In the event the utility and CBCL Limited require access to a property to investigate a defect in the sewer piping, the homeowner will be contacted to make the required arrangements.

“We would like to thank the public for their co-operation in advance as we do this important testing,” Councillor Rice said.

Questions or concerns prior to the smoke testing program can be addressed to officials at City Hall. Call 902-566-5548.
