Summerside police

A teenaged driver who fled police and led them on a short pursuit through the city late Thursday night was caught after his vehicle broke down.

Just before midnight, Summerside police received a call of a possible impaired driver in the parking lot of a Granville Street restaurant. Several callers reported that the occupants of the vehicle were throwing beer bottles at other cars and that the vehicle was squealing its tires.

Police located and attempted to stop the vehicle, but it fled at a high rate of speed.

A short pursuit followed but was terminated by police due to dangerous conditions.

But, as the pursuit ended, the suspect vehicle slowed significantly, allowing officers to approach the vehicle as it broke down on South Drive.

The driver, an 18-year-old Tignish man, was arrested at the scene, and later provided breath samples in excess of the legal limit.

He will appear in court at a later date to answer to charges of flight from police, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and impaired driving.

Kids get away with crime since Lantz got here. He needs to start giving sentences out.

Does anyone take the time to talk to these young kids in Tignish. I have talked to many and drinking in general is very high, than compound this with driving and you have a dangerous situation. This new RCMP commanding officer should get in touch with what she is doing with her resources. Clean out "L" Division and put these officers where they are required. If increased enforcement was in place, lets just say every weekend to start with unmarked and marked vehicles doing random checks( SOME PLACES CALL THEM ROVING CHECKS) for Impaired Drivers. I would venture to say 10-20 could be apprehended. Try it if I am wrong I apologize. And believe me its not just Tignish, this is rampad in Summerside at Club closing time. Club managers all know this is going on and doing nothing about it. People are drinking day and night at these places and driving home.

Didn't take long to see Tignish had something to do with this story.

The entire island has a problem with impaired drivers but I feel like Tignish has a big problem with young people driving impaired. Tignish has lost so many young lives from impaired driving. It seems like generation after generation, more young people die. Maybe the previous generation should take the time and talk to the young people about their experiences and the friends they have lost. Tignish has a reputation and a lot of the young people take pride in their town and there is not often cops around there.
