Atlantic Beef Products can now sell with assurance to Muslims

The Islamic Food and Nutrition Council of Canada has certified the Albany beef plant for halal production of its products.

Atlantic Beef Products Inc., is eastern Canada’s only federally Inspected producer of beef products.

The Islamic council says it is Canada’s leading halal certifying organization.

A halal certificate provides Muslims with a reliable and independent testimony that a third party has examined the plant for quality assurance, said a press release from the plant.

The council web site says meat must not be, with absolute certainty, contaminated by pork or certain other animals, must be hung to properly drain of blood and must be killed in the name of God, to name a few criteria.

"Canada has a Muslim population of over one million and those customers can now confidently choose Atlantic Beef Products and be assured that this beef will meet the needs of Muslims for halal food products," said Russ Mallard, president.

“There has been a steadily growing interest from Muslim consumers, food retailers and food service operators looking for halal beef in Atlantic Canada,” said Mallard.

The company says that animals used for beef at the plant are fed from primarily pastured grasses, grass and clover silage and hay, as well as local grains and potatoes.

"This natural diet, combined with the time-honoured technique of caring for the animals produces a superior quality beef, rich in marbling and flavour.," said Mallard.

Atlantic Beef markets its products as Prince Edward Island Certified Beef, Blue Dot Beef and various other cuts and supplies leading grocery retailers, food service distributors and independent butchers throughout Canada.

    Meat Inspection Regulations, Every operator and every person engaged in the handling and slaughtering of a food animal in a registered establishment shall comply with sections 62 to 80. 77 Despite section 79, every food animal that is ritually slaughtered in accordance with Judaic or Islamic law shall be restrained and slaughtered by means of a cut resulting in rapid, simultaneous and complete severance of the jugular veins and carotid arteries, in a manner that causes the animal to lose consciousness immediately. 79 Every food animal that is slaughtered, other than a muskox, caribou or reindeer that is a game animal that is slaughtered elsewhere than in a registered establishment, shall, before being bled, (a) be rendered unconscious in a manner that ensures that it does not regain consciousness before death, by one of the following methods: (i) by delivering a blow to the head by means of a penetrating or non-penetrating mechanical device in a manner that causes immediate loss of consciousness, (ii) by exposure to a gas or a gas mixture in a manner that causes a rapid loss of consciousness, or (iii) by the application of an electrical current in a manner that causes immediate loss of consciousness; or (b) be killed by one of the methods set out in paragraph (a) or, in the case of a bird or a domesticated rabbit, by rapid decapitation.

    Islam requires the animal to be alive amd healthy and sacrificed to their God. Stunning is a much more humane method. You can research videos online showing animals slaughtered with and without stunning. Some believe the beef actually tastes different with halal food because hormones released spike because of the fear and anxiety the animal feels.

    I don't want any calls upon Allah. No more meat from them. The slaughter of a halal animal is called "zabihah" and there are certain guidelines to follow: Allah's (God's) name must be pronounced during slaughter. The instrument must be very sharp to ensure humane slaughter. The animal must be slit at the throat. The animal must not be unconscious The animal must be hung upside down and allowed to bleed dry. Eating blood is not halal. These steps must be accomplished by a Muslim or the People of the Book (Christian or Jew.) Many observant Muslims find kosher meat acceptable. The animal must have been fed a natural diet that did not contain animal by-products.

    I've seen enough of these comments condemning the way some people think the animals are being dealt with. The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) has rules for how this process is done. The CFIA would not allow for the inhumane treatment of animals. There are Federal Veterinarians on site at all times. Please do not assume what takes place in other countries is the same as what takes place here. Don't allow google to be your trusted source for how everything works in the world and assume it applies in this situation.

    Halal, Kosher, Canadian method, it is all the same, just go to a slaughter house and see for yourself. The industry is simply responding to a demand from the public. A steak is a steak. Enjoy!

    Halal also means not stunning animals before slaughter.

    If they want their meat killed by slicing the throat rather than some other, faster, method of slaughter that's up to them. If I have to pay more for my food to cover the cost of their add-on certification then I'm buying from someone else.

    Is it true that animals killed are not stunned before the knife is used to cut their throat? How is this a humane practice ?
