Pay hike coming for city council

Charlottetown city councillors will be getting a pay raise, but how much is not yet certain.

The raise will be based on the lowest negotiated rates for the city’s various unions.

A resolution on the pay raise has not yet come to a vote on the floor of council chambers, which means that it won’t happen this month.

The city is still in the process of negotiating with some of the unions. When all the unions have signed, council members will receive a raise at the lowest rate, retroactive to Jan. 1.

Councillors gave themselves a hefty raise last July when, without debate, they voted to accept a report prepared by Peter Kelly on compensation. Kelly met with each council member to examine how much time they committed to the job.

In the end, Mayor Clifford Lee’s salary jumped from $58,000 to $65,500, an increase of 12 per cent; councillors’ pay jumped 22 per cent, from $26,700 to $32,700;

The deputy mayor got an 18 per cent boost, from $30,000 to $35,700, as well as an additional $3,000 per year for filling in for the mayor.

Council members also got free smartphone packages and Internet access.

    NO pay hike coming to this old woman. and no municipal tax relief coming when this gang keeps grabbing. Interesting how the taxpayers are held up for ransom by modern politician, who apparently can give them selves raises when it suits them. After pretending to have the green light from some hired gun they know will land on their side of the issue. We the taxpayers have absolutely no recourse, it is amazing this is happening in a modern democracy, especially when so many people are having such a hard time making ends meet. This is nothing but greed, so next time any, be federal, provincial or municipal, politician pretends to utter words of care for the poor, I wish for a chance to spit those hypocrites in the face. These goldplated honorariums plus all kinds of fringe benefits and half their meals for a part time job is disgusting. I have no respect for any of you, as I eat oatmeal three times to have enough money to pay my property taxes to keep a roof over my head. The City has become an overpaid and overstaffed empire, where people fall over selves. Thanks for nothing.
