A traffic stop turned violent Wednesday night, after Queens District RCMP attempted to arrest a man who appeared to be driving while impaired.

Just before midnight, officers observed a vehicle leave a drinking establishment in what police describe as an "aggressive manner". The vehicle struck a snow bank, accelerated quickly at a high rate of speed and drove erratically on Cornwall Road before being stopped in a driveway.

When stopped, the 50-year-old, male driver showed signs of intoxication and refused to obey the officer's demands. A physical confrontation followed as the officer attempted to arrest the driver.

A second officer arrived to assist and a conducted energy weapon (CEW) was used to gain control of the driver, who police describe as extremely combative.

The passenger also proved a problem for RCMP, who have charged the 37-year-old man with obstruction and causing a disturbance.

RCMP have obtained blood samples from the driver, who was treated and released from hospital and subsequently lodged in cells for the evening.

Road conditions at the time were treacherous following Wednesday's snow storm.

Charges for impaired driving will depend on the results of the analysis of the driver's blood. Charges for resisting arrest, obstruction and causing a disturbance are pending.

Organizations: RCMP

I don't care if people are drunk or stone cold sober. Hitting or fighting with a Mountie is just plain wrong. It's wrong!

These are the type of individuals who think impaired driving is an accepted practice when in reality they are killing people..........

Good, Glad he was arrested. There is NO reason for anyone to be drinking/impaired and driving! None. My curiousity though, is with the term: conducted energy weapon (CEW). Is that a covert way of saying Taser?? If so, why? If not, then again what is a CEW? Please, thanks.

CEW is an acronym for Conducted Energy Weapon which is what it is. CEWs are made by the company Taser International. The word "Taser" is is more commonly used by society, although CBC likes to refer to it as a "stun gun" as a way of sensationalizing everything they do. Nothing covert about CEW, the Mounties are very correct in their vernacular.
