At the Prince County Hospital, Jillian Culleton holds her daughter, Kallie, who was born at 12:05 a.m. on New Year’s Day, and she was the first baby born on the Island in 2016.

SUMMERSIDE - Jillian Culleton, of Alberton, delivered P.E.I's first baby of 2016 at 12:05 a.m., minutes after people finished toasting the new year.

However, Culleton said there’s no other way she would have wanted to ring in 2016.

“It was very emotional and exciting,” said the mother of four children.

“I was having pains the night before on the 30th. I woke my parents up around 5 in the morning. I left it for a bit, but as the day went on the pain was getting worse.”

Culleton called the Prince County Hospital first before deciding, and she was told to go in.

“Sure enough, they hooked me up and my contractions were three minutes apart.

It was around 9 p.m. They were trying to hold me off. They said, ‘we want you to have the New Year’s baby.’”

Culleton was hooked up to monitors as the nurses kept a close eye on her.

“Then they took me down for my section. I wasn’t thinking I was going in to have a New Year’s baby at the time,” she said.

Kallie Susan Georgina Culleton-Desroches weighed 7.6 pounds, and the mother and daughter will be able to go home in the next few days.

“It was the best way to celebrate New Year’s,” she said, as her daughter slept in her arms.

“It was amazing. It’s an experience of a lifetime that I could never forget.”
