SUMMERSIDE - The sudden departure of one of Prince County Hospital’s three anesthesiologist has forced the hospital to reschedule a number of surgeries.

According to Health P.E.I., the doctor in question left unexpectedly in November, prompting about 25 patients to be given new dates for their surgeries.

The Summerside hospital has since secured the services of a locum anesthesiologist to fill in until a full-time replacement is recruited.

The Prince County Hospital has had trouble keeping a full complement of anesthesiologists in recent years.

The hospital was operating with only one for some time in early 2015. Another shortage in 2014 also prompted the rescheduling of a number of surgeries.

Health P.E.I. has said in the past that it can be challenging to recruit specialists to come to small urban centres, like Summerside.
