Dog park

MONTAGUE - Letting Fido off the leash is a dream for some residents in Montague.

And while there may be support for a dog park, just where to put such a facility has councillors gnawing on the bone.

“I think it’s a great idea, but where?” asked Coun. John MacFarlane. “That’s the big question.”

The request was submitted to council by Sherren MacKinnon representing a number of dog owners.

Currently, dogs and walkers frequent the Confederation Trail, but council was advised the “on the leash” rules are not consistently followed and some non-dog walkers have complained that they have been intimated by dogs.

MacKinnon said many dog owners lack a safe place for their dog to exercise and socialize with other dogs off the leash.

“I like the idea, but we need to explore possible locations and get input from these dog owners,’’ said Coun. Debbie Johnson.

Town administrator Andy Daggett said the only available public property is a field near the Wellness Centre which would require about $12,000 worth of fencing.

“I think we should work with these people to find a suitable location before making any decisions,’’ said Coun. Jim Bagnall.
