Weather Watch

Environment Canada has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for Queens and Kings Counties, P.E.I.

In a statement it said, “conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain.

”An unstable air mass ahead of an upper area of low pressure could give rise to the development of severe thunderstorms today giving large hail and torrential rainfall. In addition, cold air aloft combined with the relatively warmer waters of the Northumberland Strait and near Western Cape Breton could produce waterspouts this afternoon and evening.”

The statement also said that large hail can damage property and cause injury and severe thunderstorms can produce tornadoes.

“Be prepared for severe weather. Take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches and stay indoors when a thunderstorm strikes. There isn't a place outside that is safe during a thunderstorm. Stay away from all windows, skylights and doors.”

Environment Canada meteorologists will update alerts as required.

Stay up to date with Weatheradio or your local media. Email reports of severe weather to weather ASPC@ec.gc.ca or call 1-877-815-9900. You may tweet reports using the hashtag #PEStorm.
