MONCTON, N.B. — A New Brunswick man has pleaded guilty to three first-degree murder charges in the fatal shootings of three RCMP officers in Moncton.

Justin Bourque also pleaded guilty to two counts of attempted murder in the Court of Queen’s Bench today.

The 24-year-old was recently found competent and mentally fit to stand trial after undergoing a psychiatric assessment, but during an appearance in court today he pleaded guilty to all five charges he faces.

Constables Dave Ross, Fabrice Gevaudan and Douglas Larche were killed after responding to a report of a man with firearms in a residential neighbourhood in the northwest area of Moncton on June 4.

Constables Eric Dubois and Darlene Goguen were wounded and later released from hospital.

Bourque was arrested following a manhunt that spanned 30 hours and brought the city of 69,000 to a virtual standstill.

This was a cold blooded, premeditated murder of police officers. Human beings with family, friends and fellow officers who loved them. Lock him up and throw away the key. He deserves no mercy, as this was a trap with officers walking into a situation where they as most people would with a presumption of just a person not exactly thinking of what would come next, not a cold blooded murderer out for someone's life no matter who it hurt.
