Island Coastal Services will carry out the $2.3 million project, it was announced during a special meeting of city council this afternoon.

The City of Charlottetown has awarded the tender for the next stage of construction for the Miltonvale Wellfield Development.

Island Coastal Services will carry out the $2.3 million project, it was announced during a special meeting of city council this afternoon.

The work will include the installation of piping, a control building structure and access roads.

“The City of Charlottetown is pleased to be able to continue on with this important project,” said Charlottetown Mayor Clifford Lee.

“This new wellfield development will allow us to better balance our water extraction across multiple wellfields to become a more sustainable water supplier for the city, which is our ultimate goal for this project.”

Edward Rice, chairman of the city’s Water and Sewer Utility committee, said the drilling of all of the production wells for the Miltonvale wellfield is complete. In addition to the work by Island Coastal, the next steps will also include further testing of the new wells.

Funding for this project to date has been provided by the Canada-P.E.I. Building Canada Fund.

“This is a multi-year project estimated to cost $16 million. This is work that has to be done to provide for the current and future water supply needs for Charlottetown,” said Rice.

“In addition to addressing our water supply needs, we’re creating jobs through the life of this project which we estimate will be completed in 2016.”

The work for the current tender is expected to begin this month and wrap up in December.
