Race Week underway in Charlottetown

Less than two weeks after Arthur battered the shore, the Charlottetown Yacht Club is hoping for smooth sailing over the next two days.

A total of 27 boats — from Charlottetown, Moncton, Halifax, Lunenburg, Shediac and Saint John — began competing in the annual Race Week competition on Thursday.

In a twist of irony, organizers were trying to fit four races in on Thursday because there’s not much wind in the forecast today and Saturday.

“When I talked to you 10 days ago, things were pretty bleak and we were pretty busted up,’’ Kerry Marsh, commodore of the yacht club, said Thursday. “But with lots of effort from the staff, volunteers, divers, well, just about everybody helped put the club back together.’’

Ten days ago, there was thought given to cancelling the event but so much planning had already gone into it the decision was made to proceed.

Marsh said it’s still too hard to pin down what the exact cost of repairs will be but he said it’s safe to say it will be somewhere between $50,000 and $100,000. They’re still adding it up and purchasing materials before they sit down with their insurance adjuster to arrive at a total price tag.

It will be around $25,000 to fix the ramps. There was electrical damage, docks that were smashed beyond repair. Aluminum ramps that were destroyed have been temporarily replaced with wooden ramps.

“Slowly but surely we’re putting things back together. The stuff that was damaged beyond repair we are now in the process of replacing now. We are together and we are functional.’’

Race Week is open to the public. There is nightly entertainment at the club, with Adam MacGregor and the Foes on stage tonight at 10 and Moresoul under the spotlights Saturday, same time.

“There’s both onshore and offshore entertainment.’’

Focus will have to turn back to repairs soon enough but at least for a few days, boaters can relax and have some fun.
