Santa's Angels Summer Festival
While he usually only visits once a year, it seems that Santa Claus will be stopping in Charlottetown this summer.
However, his summer vacation will be a mix of business and pleasure.
The first annual Santa’s Angels Summer Festival will take place at Victoria Park in the field across from the cannons Charlottetown this Sunday, July 20, from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m.
Kenny Zakem, one of the founders of Santa’s Angels, said the purpose of the festival is to raise funds and awareness for the surprise Santa visits the group does every Christmas Day.
“Because of social media increasing, our whole cause has gotten larger, more people are wanting to get involved and we’re visiting more families every year,” Zakem said, noting the group has just celebrated 10 years of doing the Christmas morning visits.
“So it’s bringing us to a point where we have to raise as much money as possible. We thought we’d have a fundraiser that brings awareness to what the cause is, plus help us raise some funds.”
Zakem said the festival will be an all-ages event that will include a petting zoo, magician, inflatables and well-known characters such as Big Bird and Elmo.
The day will also see members of the Island Storm and Charlottetown Islanders in attendance, as well as an obstacle course, police and fire vehicles, live entertainment and food. Some of those athletes, as well as some other well-known Islanders and politicians will also be taking part in a dunk tank.
The festival will also see Santa himself giving out some prizes.
“He’s vacationing this year and he’s going to be on the Island,” said Zakem. “We hope to be able to do this ever year. This way it gives people a jumpstart to keep it fresh in their minds. We will also have have a dropbox where people can submit the names of families who might want a visit from Santa this Christmas.”
Zakem said anyone looking to volunteer for the festival can also contact him through the group’s website.
Santa’s Angels is a volunteer charity group that carries out a surprise Christmas morning visit by Santa and his elves to hundreds of individuals in the Charlottetown area.
Each package is customized based upon the needs of the individuals or family, and aims to create an exciting Christmas morning to those that may not otherwise be able to have one.
The group also visits several homes, the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Addictions Centre and Anderson House Shelter.
