Charlottetown residents can expect to see plenty of motorcylists this week with today’s kickoff of the Red Knights International Convention.

About 250 motorcyclists arrived Wednesday. The remainder of the 506 cyclists registered are expected to arrive today.

The Red Knights Motorcycle Club has 300 chapters and a membership of more than 9,000 firefighters throughout Canada, United States and in 12 other countries. Their mission is to enjoy the community of firefighters and project a positive image of motorcycling through social, charitable and educational activities.

“We have members from all corners of the world here this week in PEI, as far as Australia, Switzerland, Texas, British Columbia, and all points between,” says P.E.I. chapter president Scott Ryan.

The convention agenda will provide for numerous planned events along with ample free time to explore the province. The convention wraps up Sunday.

“We are incredibly excited for the convention to start; we have been planning it since 2008,” said Ryan.

“Last year the convention was in Rutland, Vermont and 2015 will be held in Galveston, Texas. The members were enthusiastic to get the opportunity to come to P.E.I. this year and we are more than thrilled to show them our Island hospitality. Please keep an eye out for us on the roads this week.”
