Charlottetown City Hall
List of expenses should be available in the next few weeks
Residents in Charlottetown are soon going to get another look at how much its elected representatives spend.
A spokeswoman with the City of Charlottetown said Monday they are currently working on an updated list. That list of expenses should be available in the next few weeks.
Last September, Charlottetown followed Summerside’s lead by posting councillors’ expenses online in an effort to boost transparency in how tax dollars are spent.
Coun. Cecil Villard, chairman of administrative services, said all levels of government need to be more accountable and transparent with how they spend taxpayers’ money.
“If we have the opportunity to do that at the municipal level we have an obligation to do that,’’ he said.
The city hasn’t released a list of expenses since then but it working on the list now.
In the report that was released late last year, most of the councillors had spent between $3,000 and $4,000 on travel since the beginning of 2013.
Mayor Clifford Lee spent the most on travel, spending $15,700 on 10 trips, including one to the East Coast Music Awards in Halifax. At the other end of the spectrum, Coun. Eddie Rice spent the least on travel. According to the report, he spent a mere $125.
