Opposition Leader Steven Myers

Opposition Leader Steven Myers says he’s not hearing anything positive about Fisheries Minister Ron MacKinley when he visits Island wharves.

“Time and again I heard from seasoned Island fishers, not just new entrants, that while prices were up a little this year, many of them will have to go west to supplement their income,” said Myers.

“The fishers I spoke with were blown away that a minister could spend almost $10,000 on food and perks for himself, when they have to make hard decisions at home.”

He said many Island fishers were on boat quotas during the season, which limited the amount of daily catch that fishers could sell, and early catches in May were not strong in some parts of the North Shore of Prince Edward Island.

“Fishers have been calling for leadership from Ron MacKinley since the tie-up last year, to no avail. All they’re asking for is a fair price and a sale for their lobster.”

Myers pointed out that the rising costs of doing business, low prices, and boat quotas have left many fishers making tough choices in order to meet their loan obligations and provide for their families now that the season is finished.

“They’re appalled that the minister spent $10,000 on buckets of chicken and burgers, but never bought a single lobster to support the fishery. $10,000 and more is the June payment for some fishers, and unlike MacKinley, they don’t have a government credit card to pay it.”

Myers says the landing day message was loud and clear — “the minister of fisheries has his priorities in all the wrong places and fishers are fed up.”

I am no MacKinley fan, but he has just become a scapegoat in all of this. Fisheries is Federal, so his influence is limited at best. Really though, what is he to do? The market is not what it used to be. We live in a global economy, that provides options to the consumer. Once you leave the maritimes, the price of lobster starts going up and it just isn't a good value. That is how I see it. There isn't a thing MacKinley can do about it.

They must be suffering big time giving up all this money . What a crock . Wish I had as bad a bank account as them after working 6 hr. days for two months . Pogey & play time now . No wonder you see ad's looking to buy a fleet's since it's such a bad business . ha,ha We the general taxpayers are the fools .

@ Fishers are fed up . 6 hrs a day really is that all they work . As for missing the double haul I would say that's because you will not catch enough in the double haul to pay your fuel ,extra bait ,hired hand another full week or have to take them in with it blowing ...lol . I think you should buy a fleet if it's only 6 hours a day work . You would make a killing ,just no vacation time or sick days or holidays . Go get a fleet an you can have the big bank account too along with the big bills ..lol

Has Steven Myers ever heard anything good about the Government ever? The man like many of his party are totally negative and down on everyone who is not a Conservative. This man needs to learn the public does not like or elect to government someone who is always on the negative side. Maybe when Steven Myers is elected as long as MacKinley he will understand this. But really I doubt Steven Myers will even be elected half as long as MacKinley has been so I doubt he will ever understand anything.

Have you ever listened to MacKinley? If anyone is guilty of negativism, it's him. I have yet to hear this man speak without a snarl. He needs to go, big time.

since when is Governments job to look after a private business sector? There is no boycott of Lobster by another province and no International trade blockade, so what is the Government expected to do? Top up the wages and income of those working in the fishery?

here's a good one. I buy a Quahaug licence 7 years ago for $5000 so I can stay home with my family and make a decent living. The price per Quahaug was .25-.35 cents 13 years ago. now the price is .11 -.14 cents while the buyers still get top prices and guess who gives a crap.....NOBODY
