A new paved promenade in Stanhope is the final piece of the bicycle-friendly route from Charlottetown to Prince Edward Island National Park.

Cyclists can now pedal from Charlottetown city limits to North Shore beaches on paved paths and shoulders.

A new paved promenade in Stanhope is the final piece of the bicycle-friendly route from Charlottetown to Prince Edward Island National Park.

“This pathway has been a priority of the Community of North Shore for a long time, and I want to thank residents and the Stanhope Golf and Country Club for their patience,” Tourism Minister Robert Vessey said in a news release. “Now cyclists will be able to ride more safely – from St. Peters Road through York and all the way to the beach.”

The newly opened 1.1-kilometre section connects the paved shoulder of Route 25 to the existing paved promenade on Bayshore Road. The area can be seen in Grid 26 of the online Provincial Road Atlas.

Cycling P.E.I. has worked with the department since 2008 to get the promenade completed.

“Minster Vessey continues to be very proactive in making the roads safe for cyclists, and we acknowledged this by awarding the minister our Builder’s Award in 2013,” said Mike Connolly, Cycling P.E.I.’s executive director. “This project has been on our infrastructure wish list, and we are ecstatic that the province and the minister have taken the initiative to implement it.”

Cyclists can also access the Confederation Trail, which offers more than 414 kilometers of vehicle-free travel from tip to tip on P.E.I. For more on bicycle safety, visit www.gov.pe.ca/highwaysafety/bicyclesafety; for more on Confederation Trail, visit www.tourismpei.com/pei-confederation-trail.

would it really be asking too much of the reporter to draw on a map the route a person would have to take to bike all the way from Charlottetown to the beach. I've driven out that way recently and it appeared to me that the trail ended only a couple of miles past the airport?
