Get out the sunscreen Prince Edward Island! It’s here, it’s finally here!

After a long, miserable winter and a spring that left a lot to be desired, summer arrives — temperature wise — in a big way on Saturday.

Gina Ressler, a meteorologist with The Weather Network, says Islanders can expect sunshine and hot temperatures right through until at least Wednesday.

“I do have some good news for you. If you can get through this unsettled weather (today) we do have a very large ridge of high pressure that’s going to be moving in and it looks like it will be the dominant weather pattern right through until the weekend,’’ Ressler said.

Things should start to clear up Friday morning before the heat arrives on Saturday, with a high expected around 24 degrees Celsius and humidity that should make it feel more like 27.

Sunday is sunny with a high of 25 (feels like 28), Monday will be 25 (feels like 29) and skies will remain clear on Canada Day with a high of 24 (feels like 28). The average high for this time of year is 21.9 degrees Celsius.

It couldn’t come at a better time. The school year just finished and people are busy planning their weekend escapes, outdoor parties, picnics and cottage getaways.

“It actually looks like this high pressure will stick around until Tuesday, maybe even Wednesday, before it starts to break down,’’ Ressler said, noting that the humidity will make it feels well into the 30s in parts of the Maritimes.

Ressler said it’s important to remind people that with hot and humid weather things like hats, sunglasses and sunscreen take on a greater importance.

“Also, with that afternoon warmth make sure you don’t leave any kids or pets in the car,’’ she said.
