Prime Minister Stephen Harper answers a question during Question Period in the House of Commons on Parliament Hill in Ottawa, Tuesday June 17, 2014 .

Prime Minister Stephen Harper will visit the theatrical home of Anne of Green Gables during a brief appearance in Prince Edward Island Thursday.

Harper is scheduled to make an announcement at the Confederation Centre of the Arts in Charlottetown Thursday afternoon, although just what he is announcing is being kept under wraps.

He will participate in a photo-op at the theatre box office with federal Fisheries Minister and Egmont MP Gail Shea at 12:30 p.m.

Then at 1:30 p.m., he will deliver remarks in the Confederation Centre’s Memorial Hall, where Prince Charles recently unveiled a plaque commemorating the building’s 50th anniversary.

No one from the federal government would confirm the nature of the announcement.

The province has been pushing to get a federal funding agreement in place for a third power cable to the mainland an infrastructure project expected to cost upwards of $90-million.

The Guardian has been told Thursday’s announcement will not be related to the power cable.

Funding that will help the Confederation Centre did get a mention in the federal government’s 2014 budget this spring, which could be why Harper is making his remarks in this location.

Economic Action Plan 2014 announced that beginning in 2014-15, the Fathers of Confederation Buildings Trust, which oversees the Confederation Centre, will receive $1.8 million in funding as part of $105 million in ongoing yearly funding of core arts programs across the country.

There is also close to $7-million in forthcoming federal funding for the 2014 celebrations that has yet to be officially announced from Ottawa.

Harper is not scheduled for any other official events during his stop in P.E.I.

The Guardian will provide comprehensive coverage of Harper’s visit throughtout the day Thursday.

Can't have PEI without EI otherwise we'd just be P

well, my opinion is that EI needs to tighten up as I for one, am tired of working to put money in there for repeat seasonal claimants- I totally agree with paying in to help those in need by true unemployment , and would even pay more, but seasonals need to take the jobs that are out there when they have no work, or budget their seasonal pay over the year

What a bunch of silly misinformed people. The Harper Govt has pumped billions into this province to keep it alive. I say stop the nonsense and send in a commission to run this province. The Liberals can't.

@ Garth Staples, yes we need a Commission to dump all those useless MLAs and just have one yes just one governing body for the whole island cut cost by all means,by doing the the inside cuts first, such as all the dead wood and government vehicles gas cards cell phones and the list goes on and on then look at the revenue by cleaning inside first, with people leaving this island every day and we are losing revenue really fast, this island cannot go on like this very much longer,

I wish he'd stay away from PEI, he's not wanted here. He is driving the country into the ground with his appalling environmental and foreign policies.

Appears some people want to hide from the rest of the world. Please name examples of PM Harper driving the country into the ground! Such foolish statements in a free country.

@ Reality Check - right on brother. Only problem is Islanders don't want reality. Rather have 3 mps on the sidelines while Gail gets all the goodies for her riding. You just can't fix dumb.

The only people complaining on here as usual are the bums who were cut from the federal money pot. Canada post should be eliminated all together and Mike Duffy means nothing to anybody so stop whining about that BS. Are you going to vote NDP, I doubt it. How about the pot smoking , inexperienced Liberal baby destroyer Trudeau from Quebec. His father was no damn good and neither is he. Anyone with half a brain wouldn't vote for that . If it wasn't for the federal conservative Harper government then the country would be as screwed as our Ghiz run Liberal government here on PEI. Well done Harper!!! Keep up the great work, You have my vote.

The NDP couldnt be any worse than what we have tried thus far and Trudeau would be far better than what we have now. Being young and for pot are not negatives in most peoples mind, I find it amusing the Cons use his for pot stance in their negative ads? This is the one point most agree with him on and the dinosaurs who dont will be dying off and gone soon anyway. Also legalizing it will of course not make it easier for kids to get and there was also no valid reason for to ever to have been made illegal to begin with. Harper could never get my vote since I consider him the worst leader we have had and unless they make some serious changes to their platform no Con will ever see a vote from me.

I may agree that both the NDP and Liberals need to some serious work on their policies. But Harper is the meanest, undemocratic, base driven, unCanadian politcian this Country is having the misfortune of witnessing. I cannot wait until 2015 and see the look of disbelief on his face the day after the election when Canadians show him what they really think of him and his reform party. Ps. I also believe Ghiz should be shown the door as well. Like, harper, I cannot even look at either one. But there is no other party on the Island at this time.

Perhaps as an austerity measure. In lieu of a down room at a Hotel . The PM can use Mikes House. I am sure Mike Duffy would allow him to use it. As a rest centre. Robby McRobb

I hope the PM announces that he is going to change the EI rules as we will need them after Robert sends CF packing. Then maybe the PM will clear up the PROVINCIAL debt that Robert and Wes has created. Afterwhich just maybe the Government can lower taxes and fees for just about everything.

Aw, after robbing the EI fund and slashing every budget for services and health they could (DVA, Canada Post, etc, etc), now the Tories are going to loosen the ol' purse strings in time for an election year. Aren't they so wonderful? Won't cost them a dime to promise funding in 2015, after all, they won't be in office.....
