SUMMERSIDE — A 21-year-old Kensington man was sentenced to seven days in jail after pleading guilty in provincial court last week to a charge of theft.

David Richard McNeill was charged in connection with the theft of a wedding ring and an engagement ring from a Malpeque home on Jan. 28. The rings were sold to a local jeweler who in turn resold them. The rings were not recovered.

The stolen items were identified through photographs and linked back to McNeill as the ones he had sold to the jeweler.

The rings were valued at $1,045. The victim did receive an insurance claim settlement of $500 for the rings.

In addition to the jail term, Judge Jeff Lantz ordered McNeill to make restitution in the amount of $500 to the insurer and $545 to the victim. McNeill was also placed on 18 months probation and ordered to pay a victim fine surcharge of $100.
