Prince Edward Island provincial court
A woman bragging outside a courtroom about her thefts has been given 60 days of weekend time inside jail.
Sherry Ann MacPhee appeared Friday before provincial court judge John Douglas for sentencing on a charge of stealing a handbag from Lady Slipper Intimate Apparel & Accessories in Confederation Court Mall.
The court was told MacPhee, 38, of Charlottetown, walked into the store, reached over the counter and snagged a handbag worth $128.
It was not the first time MacPhee had stolen from that store but it was the first time she got caught, the court heard.
While waiting for the start of a previous court appearance on this charge, MacPhee began chatting with someone she knew in the lobby about this theft.
She told that person she had stolen three other purses from the same store.
The owner of Lady Slipper was sitting nearby and heard everything she said, the court was told.
In addition to the weekend jail time, Douglas put her on probation for 18 months and ordered her to pay for the one purse she was caught stealing.
MacPhee is due back in court on July 7 to be sentenced on two other charges of theft from The Gap and the Atlantic Superstore.
