Carl Gallant of North Rustico was on the wharf Saturday April 19, 2014 getting some his lobster traps ready for the opening of the season April 30. The ice in some harbours and in the Gulf of St. Lawrence could be a problem for fishermen but most are not worried. The main thing on their mind is the price that will be paid for lobster.

Lobster fishermen in many ports on P.E.I. are preparing boats and gear for the opening of the lobster season April 30.

Less then one month ago any fishermen asked would say ice could be a problem on opening day, but not any more. With the exception of a few ports ice should not be a problem, one fishermen said Saturday. The last thing they want is a delay in the start of the season because unlike years ago there are no extentions granted by the Department of Fisheries and Oceans.

Billy boy You will have to work far harder to bring any personal insults that will get a rise out of me let me tell you . Why are you degrading fishermen admit that you have the brain of a fishermen. If you want to compare investments or income from my business's you just might go back to your 900 sq ft bungalow crying . And Robert look dude you bespoke a lack of IQ. BenDice, typos can be excused by the rocking of a boat, but not bad grammar. To me bad grammar bespeaks of a lack of education no matter how much you brag in your post.

Ah we have struck a nerve here I see in the secret world of the dole seeking handout people who live in the special place that is our self entitled lobster harvesting industry . The special EI rules ,the special tax rules, the lax CRA income tax enforcement is not enough . Now they want to bully us all into silence like they do other fishermen . We actually have right to speak out about things related to the fleecing of the EI system that is being used as an income supplement for this industry than those on the recieving end .

JRSPLACE, if you are talking about me you are way off base. I am not a fisherman and have no interest in being a fisherman. I just don't like people like you, Ben Dice, June and Observer and many others who think it is OK and even funny to belittle and mock hard working Islanders who are just trying to make a living. Losers like you and the aforementioned are the lowest common denominator who just troll the web to comment on stories just to hurt people. As was said before you and the others hate the whole world and yourselves along with it because you know when you are called a sociopath, sadist or just a plain moron it is true. Tell us, when was the last time you stepped out of your parent's basement and faced the world? Or even spoke to a women other than your mother or sister? Look at Ben Dice. He is the same as you and he tries to pretend he has a boat and spends half his time in Palm Springs. How pathetic is that and you are just like him.

Ok Roberta and bill. This is my real name. I truly am much more successful than either one of you. I write this from Palm Springs where i spend about 8 minths a year. I was an accountant for alot of fishermen before. I do not however think anyone is better than me or i better than anyone. There was no internet in my parents basement when i lived there...unlike you now. Also, every business has expenses...im not sure if you understand that. Let me save you another foolish comment...we pay income tax too. And the strange thing about those is the more tou make the more you pay..trust me. I no this well. However, if ido have to pay tax money to support your trips south and money for the kids fries and burgers at the rink...then i do feel to comment. Im basically employing you. You are not self employed, or you wouldnt be able to collect the EI. Dot bite the hand that feeds. Its ok, you really dont no much better tho. Sorry for typos...im on a boat right now....oh whats that?..mommys alling...think your supper is ready.

Gee Ben, I seem to have hit a nerve and you are becoming quite defensive. Quite telling, don't you think? For someone who claims not to feel better than others, you certainly think you are a lot better than Bill MacKenzie and me. Otherwise why would you mention early in your comment that you spend eight months a year in Palm Springs? Bragging? By the way, your grammar is terrible. You should be able to find an adult upgrading course somewhere in Palm Springs, I should think. But maybe accountants don't require proper grammar.

These nameless losers like JRSPLACE, June, Obsever and Ben Dice who hide behind phoney names and attack and bully people rank up there with the other gutless wonders who troll the web and post cruel comments just to hurt and bully people. Some of those people are being charged by police for their actions. These are the sociopaths, sadists and self-obsessed morons of the world who enjoy hurting people with their comments. But they also enjoy being attacked and bullied by other commenters and that just shows the kind of very sick people we are dealing with. They are filled with hate both for themselves and the rest of the world.

JRSPLACE, JUNE, OBSERVER and BEN DICE, what is it like living in your world where you hate everyone who is better than you are (that is just about the whole world) and who is so much more successful than you are (again that is just about the whole world). But I guess when your only aim in life is to live in your parents' basement trolling the internet and posting really dump comments it is to be expected. But as long as your welfare check covers the double doubles at Timmies and your bag of tobacco and rolling papers you are happy. What your welfare does not cover mommy and daddy surly will. What losers. You don't even have the courage to use your real name.

just a question The answer is yes they are recieving EI benefits in the spring while repairing traps in april and also immediately after the end of lobster season many open their summer EI claim .Here is the official claim dates . The benefit period for a summer claim can start as early as the week of April 1 and must end no later than the week of December 15. The benefit period for a winter claim can start as early as the week of October 1 and must end no later than the week of June 15. These benefit periods can be 26 weeks per claim .

Not all fisherman fish the 60 days many fish multiple seasons like herring tuna mackeral scallops some even go pick quahogs and oysters half you people commenting probably never even seen half of that stuff let alone know the work to fish it so if yahs need something to whine about whine about all the welfare bums or the natives who are more than capable to work but don't

  • Just A Question
    April 21, 2014 - 08:55

Are these fishers collecting EI during this season when they are getting their traps & boat's ready . If so , they can't be looking for other work & wouldn't take it if work was out there for them . Rules are unfair if this is the case and should be changed so all other workers are not second class . Shameful treatment of workers .

Who cares. It's because of these fishermen milking the EI system that people who really need it can't get it. Why doesn't the government look into that a little deeper? If they can't afford to fish, why not sell their half a million dollars worth of gear? A sure sign of Spring in a PEI. The fishermen are starting their complaints. Greedy bunch they are.

No problem to stop commenting right after fishermen quit whining all year while milking the EI system dry for multiple EI claims and selling catch for cash off the books . Fix traps in april fish in may and june them go back to EI for 9 months 30 years in a row while full time working lose their EI so you can have your leisure time .

How about about you key board warriors keep your negative and uneducated comments to yourself. Especially when you don't know what's a fair price! To begin with nobody where I fished out of got 30-45 thousand pounds. Divide that by two and your more in the ball park. Mr. Dice why don't you go back to pushing your pencil in your nice comfy chair. Not that theirs anything wrong with someone who sits behind a desk, just don't judge others with out being in there shoes...

How do they need 4 dollars a pound to make it profitable? How did do many of them afford to take off doen south and help beat the winter here? When all of the northern side is catching 30-45 thousand pounds, how do they need to get at least 4 dollars a pound to make it profitable? If they got 3 that is still excellent money for a couple months work. So tired of hearing this. Save the propaganda for your children. Not for fulltime workers and tax payers.

To people who don't understand that there are big expenses to fishing like fuel, bait, boat and license payment as well as any break downs. That is why fisherman would like atleast 4-5$ a pound. Yah it may be for only 2 months but I garrentee that any of the people that soon about fisherman wouldn't last a day doing the job themselves because its not like working a 9-5 day 5 days a week. And then spend countless hours building and repairing gear

    • Observer
      April 21, 2014 - 08:07

@jordan: Those countless hours building and repairing gear - aren't they collecting EI in that period? And thus not looking for other work or willing/able to accept other work? Yeah... I thought so.

If there priced over $5.00 a pound I will be buying Steak. Lobsters should be priced around $2.50 for canners and $3.75 for markets, so everybody can enjoy.
