Rain barrels that are available from the City of Charlottetown.

The City of Charlottetown anticipates a continued demand for the Rain Barrel Program that was originally offered in 2012.

Over the past two years more than 400 rain barrels have been ordered by Charlottetown residents and business owners.

Beginning April 16, rain barrels are available for purchase for $60 each, including tax, at the Utility Desk at City Hall. Barrels can be picked up through the City Works Garage, 12 MacAleer Drive, from 9AM until noon on May 24th. The offer remains in effect while supplies last.

“The City continues to offer this program to meet the demand of residents while having significant benefits on many levels,” says Mayor Clifford Lee. “The collection of rainwater from downspouts is stored and used for garden or other outdoor uses, thus reducing the demand on our groundwater resources a benefit to us all.”

Summer is the time of year when water resources are the most vulnerable and when demand for water is highest. By harvesting and using rainwater for irrigation in the summer months the impact on groundwater and stream levels is reduced. Rainwater is an excellent water source for plants as it is free of chlorine and is pH balanced while it also generates additional water resources.

Chair of the Water & Sewer Utility agrees. “Water collected and used from rain barrels is not subject to water restrictions in the summer months,” says Councilor Edward Rice. “Residents wanting to broaden their water source for outdoor use can utilize the Rain Barrel Program, especially if there are restrictions on water use at any time.”

The rain barrels hold 208 litres and multiple barrels can be added together to increase storage capacity, especially for residents and businesses who consume larger amounts of water. Additional information on City of Charlottetown water conservation programs is available at

If I had my name on a list for this years rain barrel cause they were all sold out last year - is there someone I can call to confirm that I'll still be able to purchase one?

I hope they're better than the junk offered in Stratford. The barrels here attract bugs and the bug screen on top is useless. They also have an overflow valve that simply doesn't work because the drain hose is just too small to handle a heavy rain..
