Sedan woman was driving collided with pickup truck at Notre Dame and Duke streets

SUMMERSIDE – Firefighters had to use a hydraulic rescue tool to free a woman trapped in her car after it collided with a pickup truck Monday morning.

The driver of the car was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries and will be released later today. The man who was driving the truck was examined by paramedics and released.

The collision occurred before 9 a.m. Monday at Notre Dame and Duke streets in Summerside.

Residents watching nearby remarked that this intersection is prone to crashes and that it has seen a handful of incidents already this year.

The intersection has come up before city council on at least two occasions, most recently in February.

A request from the public to make it a four-way stop was denied by the technical services committee after the request received no support from an earlier meeting of the police services committee.

During that meeting, Police Chief David Poirier said that in the past two years there had been only three crashes (to that date) at the intersection and all were caused by driver error.

Poirier said that people seem to get confused because there are two other four-way stops on that stretch of Notre Dame Street, those being the intersections with Rufus Street and Northumberland Street.

Police are reminding the public to use caution at the intersection of Notre Dame and Duke and to always be on the lookout for road signage, or in this case the lack thereof.

It would help if you could see what's coming at you without sticking your nose into traffic due to snowbanks!!

Common sense you stop at the stop sign and proceed when there are no vehicles coming or when it is safe to proceed. You don't try to beat the other vehicle.
