Site plan for the Souris K-12 school
SOURIS – It was pretty well a done deal, but the winning name for the new K-12 school here took more than half the total votes.
Students will be walking into Souris Regional School next fall after the Eastern School District announced the voting results here Tuesday night.
Residents, students, friends and neighbours, from the Souris family of schools all had the opportunity to vote after a short list of four names was trimmed down from 31 for the final ballot.
“I think some people really wanted the word collegiate or academy as part of the name, but others thought it was too fancy,’’ suggested Grade 10 student Morgan Cornwall who made a school spirit presentation to the board with friend Kate Doiron.
“Everyone pretty well figured regional would be in the name,’’ said Doiron.
But everyone had a choice. Consolidated school principal Lynn MacPhee has four children in the school system and everyone had a different choice.
“I would be happy with any of them,’’ she said. “But I thought regional would likely win.”
Jeff Chapman of the ad-hoc committee into the school name made the announcement during the meeting. He said there were 805 ballots cast during the voting held earlier this month with the results as follows:
Souris Regional School - 427
Eastern Kings Academy - 215
Souris Regional Academy - 129
Souris Collegiate - 34
