A group of 75 to 100 “Tweeple” will soon descend upon The Old Triangle’s Pourhouse in Charlottetown to network with the people they only know by a Twitter handle.
The first P.E.I. Tweet Up of the year will be held Friday, March 28, from 5 p.m. until 9 p.m.
A Tweet Up is an in-person networking event for people who use Twitter and for those who want to learn more about using Twitter. There have been close to a dozen Tweet Ups held on the Island to date, and the hosts of the March 28 P.E.I. Tweet Up — Eastern College staff and students — expect this one to be the biggest yet.
Carol O’Hanley, an instructor and a career services adviser at Eastern College, has been involved in organizing most of the Tweet Ups since 2010. She is using the organization of this upcoming Tweet Up to help give her students experience in event planning, event hosting, and, most importantly, networking.
“It’s been just over two years since we had our last P.E.I. Tweet Up, so I personally have been anxious to get out and see all of these people I interact with on Twitter. It occurred to me earlier in the year that a Tweet Up would be an excellent way to introduce my students to in-person and online networking, while giving them experience in event planning and hosting,” she said.
The Tweet Up is free to attend, and there have been many door prizes donated by local businesses. For anyone new to Twitter, Jaime Lee Mann and Christine Gordon Manley of local communications firm Manley Mann Media will hold an information session before the event to go over the basics of Twitter. That session will run for roughly one hour, starting at 3:30 p.m.
“Many people will probably choose to stay and enjoy the rest of the evening at The Old Triangle. The Paul McKenna Band will be playing downstairs starting at 8 p.m. that evening.”
