Winter storm and flash freeze warnings continue for Prince Edward Island

Schools cancelled across province and delays and cancellations reported at many groups and businesses

Prince Edward Island schoolchildren are getting a day off today as a winter storm continues to coat the province with snow, freezing rain and ice pellets.

The winter storm warning for Prince and Queens counties continues today, while Kings County has been issued a flash freeze warning by Environment Canada.

The Weather Office reports a low-pressure system west of Nova Scotia is pushing a mix of precipitation into Prince Edward Island today as it tracks through the Maritimes. Pellets and freezing rain will change back over to snow later today in the west. In the east freezing rain and ice pellets are possible with the main precipitation as rain.

As this system passes today, a cold northerly flow will cause temperatures to drop rapidly from above to well below zero. Water covered surfaces such as roadways and sidewalks may quickly become ice covered.

The weather is causing delays and cancellations across the province.

Schools in the Engish Language School Board are on a system-wide shutdown, as is Holland College. UPEI is also closed for the day.

School is closed in the French school board, but this is not a system-wide shutdown.

Povincial government offices are closed in Prince and Queens counties. Kings County provincial offices, including liquor stores, are delayed opening until 10:30 a.m.

The Charlottetown Airport Authority is reporting several cancellations or delays this morning. Passengers should check with their airlines for more information.
