Dr. Douglas Carmody reprimanded by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Prince Edward Island

The Council of the College of Physicians and Surgeons of PEI confirmed the finding of the Fitness to Practise Committee of the College that Dr. Douglas Carmody was found to have failed to meet the standard of care expected of a physician, a written reprimand be recorded on the Register, a letter of apology be forwarded from Dr. Carmody to Ms. A with a copy forwarded to our office, and Dr. Carmody be fined $3,000.00.

SUMMERSIDE – A Summerside doctor has been handed a reprimand by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Prince Edward Island.

In a press release posted on its website Wednesday, the college stated that Dr. Douglas Carmody, an internist at the Summerside Medical Centre, had been reprimanded by its fitness to practise committee.

It does not detail why Carmody was reprimanded, saying only that he “failed to meet the standard of care expected of a physician.”

The reprimand does not affect his ability to practise medicine in any way, but did require that he forward a letter of apology to the affected patient and pay a fine of $3,000.

The reprimand was issued Jan. 1, however, it was only posted online on March 5.

The College has told TC Media that no further information will be provided.

Attempts were also made to contact Carmody for comment, however, his office reported that he is travelling outside the province for the next several days and would be difficult to contact.

"At the provincial level, average earnings ranged from lows of $236,000 in Prince Edward Island ..." one Google site ...figures were all over. $20 hr 40hr $40,000. The point being same size fits all fines are a major problem for the poor.

I know Doug Carmody to have been a man of first-rate character since he was a teenager. I hope the process was fair to everyone. One can only imagine that a confluence of circumstance brought this about. When these things do happen, though, the fine money should go to the aggrieved party. The higher the specialty, the harder the job, and the higher the expectations and that's just part of the deal. Godspeed.
