Maritime Electric

Maritime Electric is advising Island customers to pay no attention to a strange telephone scam advising them to turn off power.

"Tonight, we have learned that customers in Eastern PEI have been contacted by someone claiming to be Maritime Electric and telling customers that they will be experiencing power surges and to turn off their power," said spokeswoman Kim Griffin in a notice issued late Tuesday.

"We want all customers to know this is not Maritime Electric," said Griffin. "Details are still being confirmed but we want you to be aware of the issue."

She said electricity customers should call 1-800-670-1012 if they have questions or concerns.

"The company will be investigating the incident and gathering more information throughout the day (Wednesday)," Griffin said.

I'm not shocked that this conduct has generated the current line of discussion.
