O'Leary firefighters mingle around a Knutsford bungalow after extinguishing a fire in its attached garage Tuesday evening. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
KNUTSFORD – A single-car garage was destroyed by fire Tuesday, but the Knutsford bungalow to which it is attached escaped structural damage.
O¹Leary fire chief Blair Perry said a passerby called in the fire alarm at 6:10 p.m. after noticing fire in the garage of a home owned by Bruce and Edna Gallant. Fire fighters quickly determined no one was home at the time.
“When we got here, the major part of the fire was in the back side of the garage,” Perry said. “It was burned through the back door.
“Our guys went in through the front door,” he said. “Three guys entered at once - the first attack line - and knocked the major fire down.”
Only about 1,000 gallons of water were used.
O¹Leary Fire Department was assisted at the scene by the West Point Fire Department. Alberton was also on the way but was turned back once the fire was under control.
Perry said an investigator from the Fire Marshal’s office is due to visit the scene Wednesday morning to complete the investigation into the cause.
He did say the fire was confined to the garage and indicated there was very little, if any, smoke penetration into the residence.
The homeowners were making arrangements Tuesday night to board up the garage for the night and to get temporary heat for the residence as the power was disconnected during the firefighting efforts.
