Even the birds were scarce this morning as P.E.I. residents, both the human kind and animals, were slow to dig out from another dump of snow. (14/02/20)

Relief is coming for winter weary Islanders.

The latest weather system dumped another 17 centimetres on Charlottetown overnight, on top of the 27 centimetres from the first storm on Wednesday.

Linda Libby with Environment Canada says another system is heading P.E.I.’s way for Friday night but will only bring about two centimetres with it.

The forecast also calls for some rain and freezing rain before people wake up on Friday.

It will be a mild weekend across the province with temperatures rising above zero for Saturday and Sunday.

Unfortunately after that, Libby says it will be a slow slide down in terms of temperatures with the return of the so-called polar vortex by the end of next week.

While it isn’t likely that temperatures will be extremely cold, it looks like highs no better than -10 Celsius for about 10 days.

Oh, and more bad news for winter weary Islanders.

Due to more ice building in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, Libby says it’s looking like a later than normal start to spring.

Island school children are getting their third day off this week — with Monday's holiday and Wednesday's and today's cancellations due to weather.

Classes are cancelled for the English and French language school boards and all Holland College centres are also closed for the day. UPEI didn't open until noon and provincial and federal government offices delayed opening until 10:30 a.m.

The Charlottetown Airport Authority has issued an advisory for travellers to check with their airlines because some flights may be affected by today's weather.
