Second system to track over the Island Sunday

Weather Watch

Prince Edward Island RCMP are asking motorists to avoid the St. Catherine's Road, Route 19, near Bonshaw.

The road has a sheet of ice covering it and, despite attempts to sand it, vehicles are getting stuck attempting to climb the incline on the road.

Road conditions across the province are icy with deep water on top after the early morning weather system dumped snow then rain on the Island.

Secondary roads are in especially poor condition, say RCMP, who ask motorists to drive with caution.

Environment Canada issued wind and rain warnings for Prince Edward Island and the Confederation Bridge had some restrictions for high-sided vehicles and trailers in place overnight.

A deepening low-pressure system in the Gulf of Maine will continue to intensify today, says the Environment Canada Weather Office. It will track across southern New Brunswick to lie over the Gulf of St. Lawrence this evening.

Rain at times heavy and strong easterly winds will diminish later this morning, but additional rainfall amounts of up to 20 millimetres are forecast over central and eastern areas of P.E.I.

The system has brought strong easterly winds, gusting 90 to 100 km/h.

The winds combined with higher than normal water levels over the Gulf of St. Lawrence may push pack ice onto the north shore today.

Winter isn't done with P.E.I. yet.

Another low pressure system is forecast to approach the Maritimes from the southwest on Saturday bringing significant snowfall and strong winds over Prince Edward Island on Sunday. However, there is also a possibility of freezing rain or rain.

"There is significant uncertainty of the track of this second system," the Environment Canada Weather Office states. "There is too much uncertainty in the track to forecast precipitation amounts at this time. The track of the low will determine the type and amount of precipitation"
