Credit Union Place in Summerside

Over $700,00 will help CUP host large-scale events, meet growing demands of entertainment industry

SUMMERSIDE – Ottawa and Summerside are investing more than $700,000 in upgrades to Credit Union Place.

The money will be used to purchase two LED screens for the arena, make upgrades to the WIFI network, increase security and safety at the CUP, and expand the current stage.

Local MP Gail Shea was in Summerside Friday to make the announcement.

“Our government, through ACOA through their Innovative Communities Fund is investing $478,100 to help the City of Summerside complete the necessary upgrades to Credit Union Place,” Shea said. “Credit Union Place plays such an important role in stimulating the local economy, not only in Summerside but in the entire region. As eastern Canada’s most state-of–the-art recreation, entertainment and meeting place, it has the capability of hosting Prince Edward Island’s largest concerts, conferences and trade shows.”

She said with the completion of the upgrades, Credit Union Place will enhance its ability to host large-scale events and meet growing demands in the entertainment industry.

“We all know that Credit Union Place is very much a happening spot,” the Shea said. “A half-a-million people come through these doors annually, from across P.E.I. and from elsewhere in the country and from around the world.”

Summerside Mayor Basil Stewart said Credit Union Place is known as the place for events on Prince Edward Island, Atlantic Canada and beyond.

“We’re very proud of this facility and all of the events that we host here,” Stewart said. “When we were building it, it just wasn’t a rink. It was a facility to contribute to the economy of Summerside. That has been happening. This facility contributes greatly to the economy of Summerside, the hotels and all of the businesses.”

Hey Don, Maybe I can explain something for you, since clearly you don't understand naming rights. Credit Union paid to have their name on the building. It's advertising for them and nothing more. They do NOT own the building and also have no obligation to pay for any upgrades that the facility deems required. I'm by no means a Federal PC/Gail Shea or PEI Liberal Gov't supporter, but your comment went from uneducated spouting into biased political ranting so quickly that I'd swear you're a politician yourself. Here are the steps for voicing opinions for future reference: 1 - Research what you want to say. 2 - Choose your words carefully. 3 - Back up what you said with valid points. 4 - Refrain from writing nonsense that detracts from your opinion. You're welcome.

Wonderful...more federal money spent on bells and whistles at CUP/Red Shores when the infrastructure around Summerside is a joke. Look at upper Central St. or Pope Rd by the GST Center, for example.

Credit Union Place is a very nice facility used by many. As a taxpayer I do believe the Mayor and Council are hiding fugures and not telling us the real costs associated to this complex. The windmills power is what is keeping this place afloat. Never meant to be a money maker, theis complex is for fitness , sports and other activities but please give us the real picture. Why to we need Federal money to keep on top of this. Just looks ate Councils decision over the years to waste money due to poor mamagement ix: Concert Fiasco" 3 million" given away. Rumour is this place is losing 3-4 Million a year. Lay all the fugures out so we the taxpayer can make our own assessments.

One would think that with all the great profits that building is supposed to be generating, they could use their own money. $700,000 dollars should be enough to build another unused ice surface, or a better Olympic pool. It should read, taxpayers of Summerside, and Ottawa taxpayers dollars!

Stop complaining, we need a decent facility.
