Second time in recent months RCMP officers confronted with sword

For the second time in three months the RCMP arrested someone in Stratford who confronted them with a sword.

RCMP Sgt. Dwayne Loppie said the police were executing a search warrant looking for drugs when a sword-wielding man allegedly confronted them.

"The incident was resolved at the scene with nobody being hurt," he said.

On Saturday morning members of the RCMP's Queens District and Kings District drug enforcement units executed the warrant in Stratford with help from the force's emergency response team and police dog service.

The RCMP seized about 2.5 kilograms of marijuana, about 150 prescription drugs, about $12,000 in cash and drug paraphernalia that included small scales.

They also seized seven swords in different styles and several knives.

The sword used during the confrontation had a broad triangular tip on the end of the blade that curved inward on both sides and was attached to a wooden handle.

Although Saturday's arrest was the second in recent months involving a man wielding a sword, it ended more peacefully.

In October Stratford RCMP used a Taser to disarm a man with two samurai swords who rushed police when they responded to a family disturbance.

Loppie said Saturday's search came after a roughly six-week long drug investigation and the emergency response team was involved because of an elevated threat level.

Robert John Long, 45, has been charged with several counts of trafficking hydromorphone, Percocet, methamphetamine and marijuana.

He has also been charged with possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, assault with a weapon and resisting arrest as a result of the alleged confrontation with the RCMP.

Long has been remanded into custody and is scheduled to appear in court Tuesday to enter a plea.
