Lt.-Gov. Frank Lewis is greeted by Summerside Mayor Basil and Gail Stewart during the levee in 2012

Islanders planning to welcome the arrival of 2014 Wednesday by shaking hands and toasting the good health of their compatriots at New Year’s Day levees will have plenty of opportunity to do so.

Thousands of Islanders are expected to attend those levees, upholding a tradition that dates back literally hundreds of years.

In Prince Edward Island levees are hosted by virtually all levels of government, as well as by military personnel, service clubs and organizations, fraternal organizations, the church, academic bodies and a variety of other groups.

Levees traditionally begin mid-morning and continue into late afternoon. Some stretch into the early evening.

A list of many of the Prince Edward Island levees follows, and is also found in an interactive map and timeline graphic. This is not a complete list; those with notices to add may do so in the article's comment section.

Levees used to be the purview of the Governor and the Military. Timothys is way out of line in offering a Levee before the Lt Gov. Typical NDP disregard for heritage and respect for our culture.
