RCMP identify man killed on snowmobile

The young man who was killed when the snowmobile he was driving crashed into a tree near Coleman Corner on Wednesday has been identified as Kevin Michael Gallant, 18, of Bloomfield Corner.

RCMP received a 911 call at 11:10 a.m., alerting them to the accident, which occurred approximately 1 km from the Route 2 highway near O’Leary.

Gallant, who was alone on his sled, died at the scene. Another snowmobiler on a second sled was travelling with the victim at the time.

The incident occurred along the Confederation Trail about one kilometre east of the Terry Boylan Road. Police observed tracks where the snowmobile went off the south side of the trail and traveled about 25 feet before crashing into a tree. It was snowing heavily at the time.

The O’Leary volunteer fire department employed its rescue sled to help emergency crews reach the victim.
