Emergency crews were called to a snowmobile accident near Coleman, P.E.I., just after 11 a.m. today, Dec. 18.
An 18-year-old man from Bloomfield Corner died this morning when the snowmobile he was driving crashed into a tree near Coleman Corner.
At 11:10 a.m., RCMP received a 911 call alerting authorities to the accident, which occurred approximately 1 km from the Route 2 highway near O’Leary.
Sgt Andrew Blackadar, the RCMP’s media relations officer, said the snowmobiler, who was alone on his sled, died at the scene. Another snowmobiler on a second sled was travelling with the victim at the time.
The incident occurred along the Confederation Trail about one kilometre east of the Terry Boylan Road. Police observed tracks where the snowmobile went off the south side of the trail and traveled about 25 feet before crashing into a tree.
It was snowing heavily at the time.
The O’Leary volunteer fire department employed its rescue sled to help emergency crews reach the victim.
The investigation is continuing and further details will be released once notification of next of kin is conducted.
