The Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Prince Edward Island’s largest referral hospital, in Charlottetown.
Today's exercise involved a simulated "aircraft crash."
An emergency exercise is now underway at the Charlottetown Airport and the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Charlottetown.
The exercise is intended to allow various community agencies to test their emergency procedures that they have in place to deal with a real emergency while at the same time providing valuable training tool. Today's exercise involves a simulated "aircraft crash."
"The public is advised to please remain clear of the airport and not to be alarmed by the presence of police, fire and ambulances at the airport," said Doug Newson, CEO of the Charlottetown Airport Authority.
Scheduled flights will not be impacted by the exercise.
The exercise will involve a number of people arriving at Queen Elizabeth Hospital who will be made-up as casualties from an external disaster. Response will include moving these casualties throughout the hospital.
The hospital’s emergency department will be playing a significant role in the exercise. Patients coming to the emergency department seeking emergency medical care will continue to be treated. The public is advised, however, that wait times for non-urgent patients may be impacted due to staff participation in the mock disaster exercise.
To support the QEH during the mock disaster exercise, walk-in clinics in the greater Charlottetown area will be temporarily extending their hours of service for the public who are seeking non-urgent medical care.
