SUMMERSIDE — Prominent Summerside lawyer Nancy Key is keeping quiet on her recent appointment to sit on the bench of the Supreme Court of P.E.I.

The country’s Justice Minister and Attorney General, Peter MacKay, announced Key’s appointment Wednesday.

Key, who was travelling from Halifax to Summerside Thursday afternoon, indicated she was not in a position to speak about her appointment, noting that she would need to be debriefed prior to making comment.

The 56-year-old Summerside lawyer replaces Justice J.K. Mitchell, who has been appointed to the Court of Appeal.

Key, along with her lawyer husband, Derek, practise with the law firm McInnes Cooper in Summerside.

She received a bachelor of laws in 1981 from Dalhouse University and was admitted to the Bar of Prince Edward Island in 1982. In 2001, Key was appointed Queen’s Counsel.

She began practising with Key and Key in 1982, alongside her husband. In 2008, the firm, then known as Key, McKnight & Maynard, merged with McInnes Cooper.

Key’s areas of practice were primarily family law, estate planning and real estate planning.

She is a member of the Discipline Policies and Procedure Committee and Discipline Committee chair for the Law Society of Prince Edward Island, and is also a member of the Collaborative Law Prince Edward Island, Mediation P.E.I. Inc., and Family Mediation Canada.

Key also serves on numerous boards not related to her law career.

A breast cancer survivor, she serves on the boards of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation-Atlantic and the Prince Edward Island Business Women’s Association, and is a former board member of the Prince County Family Services Bureau.

She has four grown children.

Key’s appointment is effective immediately.

Senators are political hacks, judges are political hacks, politicians are... well... politicians. Our political system and the parasites that feed off of it needs a serious make over. I just lost what little confidence I had left in the justice system.
