Islanders have come to know that just because it says spring on the calendar doesn’t mean that it is spring outside.
This week’s forecast will reinforce that statement.
Spring hits P.E.I. at 8:02 a.m. on Wednesday, about the same time a major winter storm starts pushing into the province, prompting Environment Canada to issue a special weather statement for Prince Edward Island.

A low-pressure system pushing toward the Great Lakes later today will spawn a new development south of Long Island on Tuesday.
This system will then push slowly northeastward and is expected to move into the Gulf of Maine Tuesday night then track into New Brunswick on Wednesday. Environment Canada says precipitation from this system is expected to reach the Island near dawn on Wednesday.
A mix of snow, ice pellets and/or freezing rain is expected and will persist most of the day. Although it is still early to estimate amounts, it is possible that some regions may require snowfall or freezing rain warnings.
Environment Canada is urging the public to monitor future forecasts as warnings may be required.
